Imagine this: the crisp dawn air, your children’s laughter mingling with the rustle of acacia trees, and the sight of a lioness guiding her cubs across the Serengeti. These are the moments that stick, long after the toys and gadgets gather dust.
Childhood is fleeting— as explained in Jim & Jamie Sheils Book The Board Meeting, we only get 18 summers to share with our children before they’re grown up and have lives of their own. So, why not make every one of these fleeting summers extraordinary!
East Africa, is a land of adventure, with its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and exhilarating wildlife, is the perfect place to create memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s why a family trip to this magical part of the world is worth every second.
Give Your children Stories to Tell, Not Things to Hold
In a world of instant gratification, it’s easy to fill childhood with things—shiny gadgets, must-have toys, and trendy clothes. But as parents, we know that memories, not material things, shape our children.
Picture this:
- Standing as a family on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, marveling at one of nature’s most stunning spectacles.
- Watching your child’s face light up as they spot their first elephant on a guided safari in one of the beautiful National Parks
- Sitting around a campfire under a blanket of stars, sharing stories with a Maasai elder and learning about their incredible traditions.
- Relaxing on a pristine beach watching the children play in the water whilst you relax back and enjoy the incredible views that Zanzibar offers.

Every family safari is a front-row seat to nature’s greatest show. Your children will be mesmerised by the sight of zebras and wildebeests migrating across the plains, hippos wallowing in riverbeds, and cheetahs sprinting across the savanna.
When another parent recently explained to me that their job wasn't Dad, it was in-fact "Memory Maker in Chief" it made me smile as that is what we all are, or at least what we hope to be as parents, the creator of good memories.
When my wife and I recently discussed this concept of 18 summers and after some (painful) maths, we came across the realisation that we probably only have 5 more summers with our daughter and 7 more with our Son which is terrifying as we were convinced we had all the time in the world left so we are now going to concentrating on spending money on more experiences and less "stuff"
The images within this article were taken from our Children's first visit to Tanzania where we visited, Arusha, Ndutu area of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge and lake Natron finishing off on the coast for some well earned beach time.
Many lodges and camps now cater specifically to families, offering child-friendly activities like bushcraft lessons, wildlife tracking, and guided nature walks. Whether your children are toddlers or teens, they’ll find something to ignite their curiosity and sense of adventure.
